Brown Bears split on road

Albert Lea earned a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Kenai River Brown Bears in North American Hockey League action on Saturday. Kenai River defeated Owatonna 4-3 on Friday.

The Brown Bears (11-35-5) are in last place in the West Division.

On Saturday, Josh Royston gave the Brown Bears a 2-0 first-period lead, scoring both goals. His first came just 49 seconds into the game. Brad Fusaro recorded the assist. Royston found the back of the net again at the 8:22 mark of the period. Clayton Glick and Brett Lubanski had the helpers.

Albert Lea\’s Harry Quast had the lone goal of the second period.

Albert Lea tied the game at 2 in the third on a power-play goal from Anthony Iaquinto. The goal came 2:31 into the period. Johan Skinnars got the lead right back for Kenai River with an unassisted a minute after Iaquinto\’s tally.

Iaquinto stuck again three minutes after Skinnars to once again tie the game. Zack Smoot scored the game-winnning goal 20 seconds after Iaquinto tied the game.

Kenai River net minder Mike Martin made 39 saves on 43 shots.

On Friday, Latvian goaltender Dainis Vasiljevs made 48 saves in the Brown Bears win over Owatonna.

Kenai River trailed 2-1 after one period. The Brown Bears scored three unanswered goals in the second period.

Doug Beck netted the first six minutes into the period on a power play. Derek Bayagich and Matthew Cinader added the helpers. Clayton Glick found the back of the net three minutes later. Kegan Kiel and Jesse Ramsey had the assists. Bayagich scored on a goal from Cinader and Matt Sutherland with five minutes left in the second.

Owatonna\’s Jake Youso made it a one-goal game with 17 seconds remaining in regulation with an extra attacker on the ice after the Express pulled their goalie.

Owatonna struck first on an unassisted goal from Zach Verling eight minutes into the game. Kenai River\’s Johan Skinnars tied the game seven minutes later. Braden Kinnebrew and Ramsey had the assists. Dan Cecka regained the lead for the Express a minute and a half after Skinnars\’ tally.

Owatonna peppered Vasiljevs with 51 total shots. Kenai River threw 31 pucks at Owatonna net minder Matt Hemingway.

The Brown Bears scored on their only power play of the night. Kenai River kept Owatonna from converting on any of its five man advantages.
