The Fairbanks Ice Dogs defeated the visiting Kenai River Brown Bears 5-2 on Saturday in a game that had 154 total penalty minutes.

Kenai River had 16 infractions for 81 minutes and Fairbanks had 73 minutes of penalties on 17 infractions. Most of the penalty time came in the first period. Six members of each team were penalized at the 11:20 mark of the opening period. Will Aide of Fairbanks and Branden Fisher of Kenai were each given three penalties –a two-minute fighting instigator, five-minute fighting major and a 10-minute game misconduct.

Brown Bears goaltender Mike Martin was given 15 minutes in penalties, including a game ejection for fighting. Dainis Vasiljevs took over for Martin after he was ejected. Fairbanks goalie Joe Phillippi was given two minutes for crossing the red line.

Other Fairbanks penalties included James Saintey, who was given a fighting major and misconduct, Zach Tolkinen, a fighting major, Joe Krause, a fighting major, and Justin Kirchhevel, a fighting major.

Other Kenai River penalties included Jesse Ramsey, who was given a fighting major, Kegan Kiel, a fighting major and misconduct, Clayton Glick, a fighting major and misconduct, and Johan Skinnars, a double minor for roughing.

Fairbanks grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals from Saintey and Jon Feaval. Skinnars netted the Brown Bears lone goal of the period.

The Ice Dogs put another two goals in the back of the net in the second period. Derek Bayagich buried a goal with 12 seconds to play in the second.

Fairbanks\’ Michael Juola and Kenai River\’s Brad Fusaro each scored in the third.

The Ice Dogs put 41 shots on net to Kenai\’s 26.

The Brown Bears scored on two of seven power plays while Fairbanks went 0-6.

The Ice Dogs netted two power-play goals in the third period to defeat the Kenai River Brown Bears 3-2 in North American Hockey League action on Friday in Fairbanks. The goals came three minutes apart.

The Ice Dogs scored on both third-period power play chances. The first was scored by James Saintey. He then assisted on what would prove to be the game winner when Justin Kirchhevel scored with about five and a half minutes left in regulation.

Fairbanks scored on two of four power plays. Kenai River netted one power-play goal on three chances.

After the Ice Dogs grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Jon Feaval goal in the first period, the Brown Bears scored two goals in the second.

Former Ice Dog Johan Skinnars tied the game at 1-all on a goal from Jesse Ramsey and Jake Musselman nearly 12 minutes into the period. Josh Royston broke the tie on a power-play goal two minutes later.

Kenai River net minder Dainis Vasiljevs made 27 saves on 30 shots. The loss dropped Vasiljevs to 2-2-1 on the season. As of Friday, he posted a 2.56 goals against average and a .911 save percentage.

Fairbanks goaltender Mike Taffe turned away 15 of 17 Brown Bears shots.
